By 1957, Mao Zedong had become disillusioned with the direction the USSR was taking, worried about the recent uprisings in eastern Europe and seeing the reversal of many of Stalin's policies as the Soviets seeking peace with the west. Convinced that China should follow its own path, he began developing his own designs for the economy.
