Subversive Activity is a random event that occurs in Tropico 3 and Tropico 4, when the island is being threatened. Along with attacking the island directly, agents and spies working for the rebels, the CIA, or the KGB can disrupt the island indirectly by causing or inciting these activities.

Secret police forces can help prevent subversive activities from happening and will provide more options for dealing with them when they do. The chances of resolving subversive activities this way depends on several factors, including the skill of the secret agents involved and edicts such as Wiretapping.

Assassination AttemptEdit

An assassin is sent to make an attempt on the presidente's life. The assassination always fails.

  • Option 1: Blame the US/USSR, lowering respect with the region but gaining the respect of the Communists/Capitalists.
  • Option 2: Issue martial law, free of charge and without needing to meet the requirements.
  • Option 3: Make a public announcement to calm people down.
  • Secret Police Option: Send agents to capture the assassin. The success of this depends on how skilled the secret police is. If successful, the respect of all factions increase. If unsuccessful, the assassin escapes and kills one of the secret agents.

Bomb ThreatEdit

A bomb is planted in an important building on the island and a note demanding money is sent to the presidente.

  • Option 1: Pay $3,000 to $5,000 to the bombers, losing respect with the Nationalists.
  • Option 2: Lock down the building for three months to search for and clear out any explosives. The building won't produce anything during this period, but its workers will still collect their wages.
  • Option 3: Don't do anything, allowing the building to be destroyed (in some cases, the bomb threat would turn out to be a bluff, therefore leaving the building unharmed).
  • Secret Police Option: Send agents to disarm the bomb. The success of this depends on how skilled the secret police is.

Building StrikeEdit

All workers in a certain building stop working to protest their working conditions.

  • Option 1: Appease the workers by paying $300 to each one.
  • Option 2: Send the army to break up the strike, causing a few workers to be killed.
  • Option 3: Wait out the strike, stopping any work or production by the striking occupation for 6 to 12 months.
  • Secret Police Option: Send agents to infiltrate the strike and "let them have fun" to break the strike up internally. The success of this depends on how skilled the secret police is.

Hostage CrisisEdit

A couple tourists are captured by subversive forces and held for ransom.

  • Option 1: Pay $2,000 to $4,000 in ransom money.
  • Option 2: Send the army to free the hostages. The success of this depends on how skilled the military is. If successful, the respect of the Militarists increases. If unsuccessful, tourists will be afraid to come to the country.
  • Option 3: Refuse to negotiate with terrorists. This causes a large drop in tourism, but gains some respect with the Nationalists.
  • Secret Police Option: Cover up the incident and ignore the hostages. The success of this depends on how skilled the secret police is. If successful, no money, respect, or tourism will be lost, but the tourists will remain captured.

Media OccupationEdit

Enemy agents take control of a radio or TV station and start broadcasting lies and conspiracies about the presidente.

  • Option 1: Prove the broadcast wrong by scheduling an early election, during which voter fraud is disabled.
  • Option 2: Send the army in to take care of the occupiers. The success of this depends on how skilled the military is. If successful, the respect of the Militarists increases. If unsuccessful, some citizens will still tune into the broadcast and may become rebels.
  • Option 3: Allow the broadcasting, trusting that loyal citizens won't believe it. Some citizens still will and may become rebels.

Worker StrikeEdit

All members of a certain job (such as dockworkers, miners, etc.) stop working to protest their working conditions.
