In 1992, Hugo Chavez - an army officer dissatisfied with the corruption in the country - planned an unsuccessful coup against President Carlos Andrés Pérez's government. He was jailed for two years before being pardoned by the next president. After his release, Chavez began going on tour to promote his vision of socialism and anti-imperialism, which won him the presidency of Venezula in 1998. Since then, his economic reforms have greatly upset both corporations and the US.
