Factions are groups of people who, in addition to their own basic needs for happiness, have political demands that need satisfying in order to make them truly happy.
There are 8 factions present on the island.
- The Capitalists
- The Communists
- The Intellectuals
- The Religious
- The Militarists
- The Environmentalists
- The Nationalists
- The Loyalists
Each faction has a noted rivalry with the others. The rivalries between the Capitalists and the Communists as well between the Intellectuals and the Religious are especially strong.
There are three levels of support for a faction; moderate, strong, and die-hard. How much a member supports their faction alters how much the faction's relations with you will alter their vote.
Every faction has a leader; a die-hard supporter of the faction who chooses to be its representative because of their high Leadership rating. Leaders who are happy will boost your relationship with their faction while unhappy leaders will lower faction relations.
Detractors are citizens who don't support the faction at all and thus aren't affected by the faction's relations. It's possible for Tropicans to be completely apolitical and not support any faction. Such citizens vote based purely on their own happiness.
If relations with a faction drop too low, a unique factional disaster will happen until relations improve.
- Corruption - Angered over the lack or loss of profits, the Capitalists begin stealing and hoarding the island's income. While this is happening, a percentage of all money made from exports is lost to corrupt capitalists.
- Rebel Incursion - Angered by the plight of the common people on the island, Communists from around the world will travel to Tropico to join the rebels in their fight against you.
- Student Protests - Angered by a conservative and/or corrupt government, politically-charged high school and college students will walk out on classes to take part in protests. While these protests are happening, no students will gain experience or graduate into educated workers.
- Anathema - Angered at the lack of faith and morality, the island's religious officials begin denouncing Tropico's leadership in sermons. While the presidente is declared anathema, all visitors to churches or cathedrals will lose respect.
- Ultimatum - Angered over the presidente's lack of discipline and military might, the Militarists threaten to provoke a military coup in 2 years.
- Eco-Protest - Angered by the devastation to the island's ecosystem, Environmentalist protesters blockade a factory in the hopes of drawing attention to the issue. While the factory is shut down, no production is done there, but the workers will still collect their wages.
- Street Riots - Angered at the loss of national identity to foreign immigrants, Nationalists take to the streets in the hopes of killing a few in a wave of violence.
- Doubt in the Leader - Disillusioned over the presidente's lack of self-importance, followers of the neglected cult of personality will begin losing support and dropping out of the faction.
