In July 1997, the currency of Thailand collapsed and the country was effectively bankrupt due to excessive foreign debt. The financial crisis began to spread to neighboring countries, causing the exchange rate of currencies to drop, stocks to fall, and debts to rise. For the most part, China managed to avoid the worst of the crisis, but the effects were bad enough to make China reevaluate its economic policies.
