The civil rights movement was a worldwide campaign for legal equality regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. Civil rights proponents largely used nonviolent means, choosing to organize marches, boycotts, sit-ins, and other forms of civil resistance to change society's views peacefully. Despite this, the movement was plagued by violence against it, including protests and the assassination of some of its leaders.
